Early in May 2011, the Food Bank and Community Kitchens Calgary decided a partnership was in order to support newly housed Calgarians. And so, the Welcome Home Program was born.
Since May of 2011, the Welcome Home Program has been providing specialized hampers to Calgarians who are transitioning from the streets to a home of their own. Welcome Home clients are referred to the program by a partner agency working with homeless individuals and families.
The intention of the program is to provide housed Calgarians with the supplies they require for the first month of residency, removing the stress of having to source these items. Food is provided by the Food Bank, in the form of a Pantry Hamper, to which Community Kitchens Calgary adds other household items such as cleaning supplies.
In the first 18 months of this initiative there was a 127% increase in demand for Pantry Hampers!
The Welcome Home Program is a great example of the effectiveness and efficiency of agency collaboration.
