Eat Better, Exercise and Volunteer

by | Jan 6, 2017 | Blog

It’s a new year and for many people, it’s a time to set some New Year’s Resolutions. January goals range from eating better, exercising more to giving back. Caring for your community and contributing time, talent or resources to a cause you, your friends and your family are passionate about can be a great way to give back.

At the Calgary Food Bank, 156 volunteers make an amazing impact every day. We simply could not do what we do without these selfless souls! More than two thirds of the works hours are completed by volunteers.

The shifts start early in the morning accompanying drivers to pick-up donations or assisting 228 Calgary agencies in Food Link. Other volunteers are busy sorting 18,000 pounds of food in just under three hours. Compassionate individuals patiently answer the Emergency Hamper Request Line, handling more than 4,000 calls a month. Employee groups come in to help create up to 500 hampers and more dedicated volunteers distribute the food to the families and individuals in crisis.

More than the variety of tasks at the warehouse, there is an incredible camaraderie and pride among the volunteers for the difference they are making. “I just love coming here and helping out” is the common sentiment.

Doesn’t that sound like a New Year’s Resolution you could keep? It’s easy! Just visit our website to check out the different volunteer positions available and sign up today!
