A Year Later, We Look Back…

by | Mar 11, 2021 | Blog

Like many serious and monumental moments in history, many of us remember where we were and what we were doing when we realized that COVID-19 was going to disrupt life as we knew it. The Calgary Food Bank is no exception. When we look back, a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s remarkable what we have been able to accomplish.

In March 2020, when businesses and communities were shuttering in response to the coronavirus outbreak and the impending state of public health emergency orders, a group of Calgary Food Bank staff met to map out critical next steps. While many were stocking up on food, cleaning supplies and toilet paper, what were some of our most vulnerable friends and neighbours going to do? How were we going to meet the needs of Calgarians who were already struggling to make ends meet? We knew we had to come up with a plan and fast.

We were closed for one day to pivot our operations and determine our enhanced health and safety measures that would keep clients, volunteers and staff safe. We took a second day to test the plan with limited clients and agencies, then re-opened operations on Wednesday, March 18.

It has been a high stress time for everyone, and while the demand has not eased in the past 12 months, the stress of putting food on the table has been removed for many families and individuals who never anticipated using the food bank.

COVID-19 knowledge, emergency health measures and lockdowns have evolved over the months, and we proved that we could evolve too. Access has become easier, from an easing of criteria and limits to improved pick-up and distribution methods. For as long as this virus impacts our lives, and beyond, we will make changes to meet the needs of the community. One thing remains the same: we’re meeting the volume of need, safely and consistently, for all Calgarians.

It has really been of great help since I can’t get a job because of the pandemic and I have two children to care for. I am so grateful for the people and team members of the Calgary Food Bank; they are really saving lives during this pandemic and beyond. Though I don’t have cash at hand but with the hamper from the food bank I have food to feed my children.
