Volunteers Needed!
Right now, we are feeding 1,000 Calgarians a day. Hundreds of hampers are being distributed to neighbours, friends and families who need food support during this incredibly trying time. Volunteers make up half of the workforce in our warehouse; they sort, build and distribute hampers. If you have just a few hours a week, we have a variety of volunteer roles that need to be filled so please consider giving the gift of time this fall.
Most shift times are: 8 – 10:30 am, 11 am – 1:30 pm, 2 – 4:30 pm, 5 – 7:30 pm however times do vary.
“We love it here, we are treated well, we feel safe and comfortable. We’ve made friends here and discovered people we were working side-by-side with had common connections with our family.”
– Brain & Michele Tsang
Sorting
Volunteers on the sorting line are always on the lookout for dented cans, opened packages and expired items. In a single shift 12 volunteers can sort through approximately 3,400 pounds of food! Help make sure that our clients are getting the very best.
Fresh Food
Cucumbers, zucchini, corn and more! When fresh donations come in volunteers are ready to sort and bag the produce to get it out to our clients as fast as possible.
Building Hampers (Shopping)
Work with a team on an assembly line to package up bags of the non-perishable food items for our hampers.
Baby Room
Take care of our youngest clients, build hampers containing baby food, formula, wipes and diapers.
Distribution
You will be on a team either building hampers in a cart or distributing hamper bags to our clients’ vehicles. Please dress in layers in case you are assigned to take carts to vehicles!
Part of our group delivers the hampers out to the client’s cars, and we get to see firsthand the gratitude of the people who are in need. We all find the experience very fulfilling.”

ID Checker
Friendly, outgoing and welcoming! You are the first face clients will see when they come to the food bank. Meet clients outside at their vehicles to verify their ID before they pick up their hamper. Dress in layers for this job as it’s outside in the fresh air.
Call Centre
Can you lend an ear? Phone room volunteers are the critical first point of contact, answering the hamper request line to help clients access emergency food. Training is provided.
Satellite Locations
Looking to volunteer in the community? Volunteer at one of the fabulous satellite locations putting together and distributing food hampers for clients. Please note, satellite locations require some lifting. Locations include Centre Street Church (North Central) and Village Square in the North East.
Administration Roles
There are times when we will require volunteers to assist with administration work, these roles are sent out on our weekly callout when required.
Shuttle Van Drivers
Shuttle van drivers drive our FABULOUS volunteers from the volunteer parking lot to the main building (a less than 5-minute route) and back at the end of their shift. Driver’s Abstract and Vulnerable Sector check are required, and costs are covered.
Food Link Greeter/Loader
Greet and load Community Agency’s vehicles when they come to door 3. There is lifting and the use of a manual pallet jack. Volunteers jump into the Fresh Food role between loads.
**Before committing to a shift, we ask all volunteers to assess their personal level of risk using the AHS Risk Assessment Tool and to follow the advice of AHS. It estimates your risk of a severe outcome if you catch COVID-19. You will note, if you are 70 or older the assessment tool will assess you as high risk. Although we have taken every precaution to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission on our premises, we ask those assessed as moderate or high level of risk for severe outcomes by AHS to refrain from volunteering until they are fully vaccinated (2 weeks post 2nd dose). Please understand we are following the recommendations of AHS and our priority continues to be keeping everyone safe.
Please connect with your family and friends and join us; together we fight hunger and its root causes because no one should go hungry. Volunteer with us and give the gift of time!
