Today is Family Literacy Day
Child literacy is such an important issue that unfortunately doesn’t get enough attention. We are super proud of our relationship with Calgary Reads and the Book Bank program which ensures that clients that visit the Calgary Food Bank have access to quality books for their children.
It has been proven that talking, singing, and reading to your children in the early years helps with the development of important brain functions. In some cases, children who don’t get enough stimulus in the early years never catch up with their peers.
So what are some things you can do to help your child thrive?
ABC Life Literacy Canada has some great suggestions:
-
Go on a Grocery Hunt: Write your grocery list with you child and let kids find all the items in the store!
-
Home Restaurant: Have kids create a menu by drawing food items or cut out pictures from grocery store flyers.
-
Master Chef: Make up your own recipe and post it online.
So, take some time today to read to your kids and find a fun way to involve them in the day to day tasks.
