Egg-citing News!
The humble egg is back in fashion.
Eggs are back in favour with nutritionists citing that they contain good fats, do not raise cholesterol levels, are a great source of protein, and full of 16 vitamins and minerals. They are versatile, affordable, and easy to prepare. Some consider eggs nature’s perfect food!
Last year we distributed more than 1.9 million eggs to families, individuals, and organizations. One of the many reasons we include eggs in our hampers is their high-quality protein and nutritional content. This is critical for a healthy diet, especially for clients experiencing crisis and food insecurity. Having quality proteins like eggs in a hamper ensures that the household is receiving nutritious food that will aid in their recovery and resiliency.
Food insecurity has many negative health consequences such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. Poor or limited nutritional intake can decrease the potential for a healthy life. So, the mighty egg comes to the rescue!
For the Calgary Dream Centre, an organization that provides support and housing to men and women struggling with homelessness and addiction, healthy meals are critical to their client’s progress. “We serve over 300 meals a day at our facility and eggs are one of our most requested and versatile ingredients. Hard boiled eggs are amazing for lunches and snacks. Some of our clients work offsite and enjoy these for an easy grab and go boost!” says Melody Brown Foster, Community Engagement Manager at the Calgary Dream Centre.
“We serve them poached, scrambled, sunny-side up, over easy, in a quiche, frittata or omelets at breakfast. There’s nothing more delicious than an egg salad sandwich or Cobb Salads for lunch. Eggs are standard in our chefs’ from-scratch recipes for cookies, cakes, muffins, loaves, and a crowd favourite – lemon méringue pie!”
