JAMES MCARA

I am extremely honoured to have been part of the Calgary Food Bank for over 22 years. I have learned and gained experience from the wisdom of an organization that truly cares for others. I am proud of how the CFB continues to engage the community, facing hunger and food insecurity daily. Our success is due to an amazing team of staff, volunteers and partners who continue to put the needs of others first. This has been a formidable challenge, but one gladly undertaken without fear, and I am privileged to have been a leader for this incredible team.

Now it is time for me to pass the baton to our next leaders, so that they can guide and shape the organization for the future. Although rewarding, leading through a succession of economic, social, environmental, and global (yes, the pandemic) crises has taken a toll on many of us in the ‘serving’ sector.

I know that the Food Bank will continue to build upon its demonstrated community impact, learn from past successes, and look toward the future to ensure it maintains its ability to answer the needs of clients.

“Always err on the side of compassion”, was the gift of guidance shared with me by Claudia Tenant, a founding Board Member and long-time phone room volunteer when I became CEO in 2007. I believe that this simple philosophy shaped my leadership and helped drive the positive impacts for people across our city.

Thank you for your support and encouragement. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for all of us.

BOARD CHAIR

AMY LEONG

As a Board member for 8 years and the last 5 years in the capacity of the Board Chair, I have had the pleasure of working with James as he steered this dynamic organization. The Calgary Food Bank has evolved greatly under his 22-year leadership, the last 15 of which as the President/CEO. James was presented with many challenges over the years, turning them into opportunities and successes amid much uncertainty. His concern for the issue of food insecurity and his passion to serve the community resonated with the question he would ask of everyone: “Did we feed someone today?”

James was a dedicated advocate for his staff, the volunteers and the clients. He shaped leaders in the organization, and it was through this nurturing that he was able to move on with confidence that the community would be cared for. His presence will be felt every time we echo that “only together can we achieve a future where no one goes hungry”.
