Follow Your Heart! February is Heart Month
Let’s have a heart-to-heart conversation about what’s really making us happy as we mark another month enduring the Coronavirus Pandemic. In “normal” years the cold winter months have us turning inside and inward but this past year; seclusion has taken on a whole new meaning.
Providing food support during unprecedented times
2020 was a year like no other in recent memory as the Covid-19 Pandemic touched every single person in our community in some way. Despite the many unknowns the pandemic presented in the early part of the year, we were able to continue to support the community because of the generosity of Calgarians.
The Pandemic Did Not Deter Calgarians from Giving BIG This Holiday Season
As 2020 wound down, many of us felt it was all we could do to just hunker down and “get it over with,” but for so many kind and thoughtful people in our city, the opposite was true. The very best of who we are as a community shone brighter than ever this holiday season.
Rounding up, does it really help?
Have you ever been asked to make a donation through the till when shopping at your local grocery store? Or been asked to ‘round up’ your bill? If so, I’m sure you’ve also asked yourself, I wonder how the charity receives that money and the impact that your $2, $5 or $10 donation makes.
Holiday Season at the Calgary Food Bank
The holiday season is here at the Calgary Food Bank! We’re open and ready to safely serve the increased numbers of clients that need us at this time of year.
Best before, not bad after
Many of us have done it: Find an unopened box of pasta at the back of the pantry, see that it’s past its best before date, and throw it in the trash or compost to be safe. But is that really necessary? “Best before” and other food labelling terms can cause confusion, and many are surprised to learn that best before dates are simply a guideline, not a rule set in stone.
A Note of Gratitute
This Giving Tuesday we want to give back to you by saying THANK YOU. As Calgarians you have shown your support in such a big way. Thank you for your donations of food, funds and talent and ensuring that no Calgarian goes hungry!
Food Security In Times of Crisis
What is highlighted in times of disaster – be it fire, flood or pandemic – is that food needs to be part of the response; unfortunately, it is rarely considered. Policy around food does not engage with the established food service charities providing the stop gap. Food banks and food service organizations are experts in the implementation of food safety, public health and social wellbeing. We advocate for change and client security in the long run.
An Update from the CEO
In the last two weeks, we have worked diligently, implementing our pandemic response plan. It includes complex logistics that ensure thousands of people receive Essential Food Hampers through revised processes. The impact is considerable, and we continue to be focused on providing food and services while ensuring safety. We acted immediately but our systems are built to last.
